A 56-year-old Canadian man, Robin Williams, has been sentenced in absentia to 41 months in prison for unlawful marijuana importation into the United States.
The sentencing occurred in Buffalo, New York, after Williams failed to appear for his scheduled sentencing date on November 14, 2007.
Williams was first arrested on November 21, 2006, at the Peace Bridge Port of Entry, where he attempted to enter the country with a quantity of marijuana. A search of his clothing revealed some of the marijuana in his pants pocket, while an additional 108 pounds of marijuana was located in his truck.
Williams pleaded guilty to the charge on August 1, 2007, and was subsequently granted a motion to sentence him in absentia by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
The investigation leading to Williams’ conviction was conducted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charger Kevin Kelly.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York, led by U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., pursued the case.
