ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A gritty sentencing saga took a turn as John Moore, a 37-year-old felon from Rochester, NY, was handed a 51-month prison term by U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa for being a feloon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Cassie Kocher revealed that Moore has a sordid history, including four prior felony drug convictions across Monroe, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties. Despite his legal prohibition from owning firearms, Moore managed to attract the attention of Rochester Police officers in April 2020 when they responded to Tremont Street for reports of an armed man.
Arriving on the scene, officers found Moore near the driver door of a blue minivan, which was later revealed to contain a silver revolver with its serial number removed. Moore fled the scene, leading police to his quick entry into a nearby residence through its front door. The police recovered the firearm under the minivan’s driver seat.
The case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a program aimed at reducing violent crime by targeting the most violent offenders and partnering with local programs for sustained crime reduction efforts.
Investigation was led by the Rochester Police Department under Interim Chief David M. Smith and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, directed by Special Agent-in-Charge John B. DeVito, New York Field Division.
