Rochester Man Gets 6+ Years for Gun & Drugs

SOUTH BEND, IN – Travis Norman, age 30, of Rochester, Indiana, is headed to federal prison for over six years after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge Robert L. Miller, reflects the gravity of the charges and Norman’s history with the law.

Norman received 77 months in prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release. The case originated on October 4, 2018, when Rochester Police responded to a complaint at a local hotel. What they found wasn’t a simple disturbance – it was a full-blown narcotics operation and a felon illegally armed.

Police discovered Norman holed up in a hotel room with seven grams of methamphetamine, three grams of heroin, associated drug paraphernalia, and a significant amount of U.S. currency. But the real kicker? A loaded Smith & Wesson handgun was also recovered at the scene. This wasn’t a first offense. Norman had recently been convicted of Dealing Methamphetamine in Marshall County, making the firearm possession charge particularly serious.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) took the lead on the investigation, with crucial assistance from the Rochester Police Department. Federal prosecutors were able to build a solid case against Norman, demonstrating his blatant disregard for the law and endangering the public.

Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly Schultz skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the 77-month sentence. This conviction serves as a clear warning: Indiana’s federal law enforcement isn’t playing games when it comes to felons possessing firearms and dealing in dangerous narcotics. The streets of Rochester, and the state as a whole, are a little safer with Norman behind bars.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Thomas L. Kirsch II, continues to prioritize cases involving violent crime and drug trafficking, working tirelessly to dismantle criminal operations and bring offenders to justice. This case highlights the importance of collaboration between local and federal agencies in tackling these persistent threats.
