ROCKFORD — In a stunning blow to the local drug trade, Antwan D. Manley, 27, of Rockford, was today sentenced by U.S. District Judge Philip G. Reinhard to a staggering 17 years and ten months in federal prison for drug trafficking and firearm offenses.
Manley’s sentence includes 154 months for the drug trafficking charge and an additional 60 months for possessing a firearm in furtherance of his drug activities. This consecutive sentencing totals over 17 years, marking a severe penalty for his crimes.
The defendant had previously pleaded guilty on November 27, 2019, to charges of possessing with intent to distribute heroin, cocaine base, and marijuana, as well as the unlawful possession of a firearm. Manley’s confession revealed his chilling intentions: he intended to distribute the drugs to street-level users while using the loaded pistol for protection against potential robbers.
According to court documents, on January 11, 2018, Manley was caught with approximately 21 baggies of heroin, 24 baggies of marijuana, and a bag of cocaine base. His arsenal also included a stolen, loaded Beretta 9mm pistol, $6,950 in drug proceeds, four cell phones, a digital scale, and gloves, all evidence of his extensive drug operation.
Manley’s involvement in the illegal distribution of heroin did not go unnoticed by law enforcement. He was caught distributing to an individual cooperating with authorities on two separate occasions in 2017. His sentence reflects the gravity of his actions and the threat he posed to public safety.
The investigation leading to Manley’s conviction was a collaborative effort led by the FBI’s Rockford Area Violent Gang Task Force, which included agencies such as the Loves Park and Freeport Police Departments and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Talia Bucci represented the government in this case.
The sentencing was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Emmerson Buie, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI; Kristen De Tineo, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives; and Dan O’Shea, Chief of the Rockford Police Department.
