ST. LOUIS, MO – Daniel Keith Steele, 57, of Rolla, Missouri, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to seven years for running a brazen fraud scheme that swindled investors out of over $2 million. The sentence was handed down today by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey in St. Louis.
Steele preyed on hopeful investors, promising extraordinary returns – sometimes as high as one to five percent per month – through foreign currency trading. The reality, laid bare in court documents, was a calculated deception. Steele didn’t invest responsibly; he treated the money like a personal slush fund.
According to the Department of Justice, Steele only invested approximately $1.2 million of the $2 million-plus he solicited into actual foreign currency markets. The rest? Lavished on himself and his family. Court records detail the purchase of two vehicles totaling nearly $100,000, a blatant display of ill-gotten gains. He operated a classic Ponzi scheme, using funds from new investors to pay off earlier ones, desperately trying to keep the scam afloat.
The lies didn’t stop at misappropriated funds. Steele actively fabricated investor reports, falsely claiming returns he never achieved. When investigators started asking questions, he doubled down on the deception, creating and providing bogus documentation. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service spearheaded the investigation, meticulously unraveling Steele’s web of lies.
Steele pled guilty in October to one felony count of mail fraud and four felony counts of wire fraud. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard E. Finneran successfully prosecuted the case, bringing Steele to justice for his predatory actions. The seven-year sentence sends a clear message: exploiting the trust of investors will not be tolerated.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in unregulated investment schemes. Victims, lured by promises of easy money, are left picking up the pieces while the perpetrator enjoys a temporary life of luxury – until the law catches up. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on other instances of financial predation.
