Assault with a Dangerous Weapon Lands Roman Weasel in Hot Water
McLAUGHLIN, SD – A McLaughlin man has been brought to justice after pleading guilty to assault charges. Roman Evans Weasel, Sr., 39, appeared before U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on May 20, 2013 and admitted to the crime.
Weasel is facing charges of Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Domestic Assault by a Habitual Offender, each carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine or both, and a period of supervised release of 3 years. The court also ordered a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and may order restitution.
The conviction stems from an incident on March 5, 2012 when Weasel became enraged after seeing the victim, who was in a previous relationship with him, at his home in McLaughlin. The victim was assaulted with fists and a knife, resulting in multiple stab wounds and a broken nose.
Weasel had a history of assaulting intimate partners, with two or more previous convictions. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley.
A presentence investigation has been ordered, and a sentencing date has been set for September 9, 2013. Weasel was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
The case highlights the severity of domestic violence and the consequences of such actions. Weasel’s guilty plea serves as a reminder that the law will not tolerate such behavior and will hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
