Greenbelt, Maryland – In a brazen display of violence, 23-year-old Rondell McLeod of Washington, D.C. was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for his role in two armed commercial robberies.
According to court documents, McLeod conspired with Tyrell Bailey and Steven Mosby to rob cellular phone stores in Bethesda and Forestville, Maryland between March 28 and April 1, 2016. During both robberies, McLeod brandished a firearm at store employees, while Mosby served as the getaway driver. Bailey participated in the April 1 robbery, entering the store with McLeod to commit the crime.
The heists, which netted the group approximately $30,658, left a trail of destruction in their wake. On April 1, 2016, a witness who saw the robbers flee from the store called 911, providing a description of the getaway vehicle. The witness followed the vehicle for some distance before losing sight of it, but a Prince George’s County Police plain clothes officer in an unmarked car was able to track the vehicle and initiate a pursuit.
As McLeod and his co-conspirators sped away from the scene, they were pursued by Prince George’s County Police officers. Aerial surveillance allowed the officers to track the vehicle and direct foot officers to the rear delivery door of a business where McLeod had entered. McLeod was arrested, and a loaded .40 caliber handgun was recovered from the ground where he had been laying.
McLeod’s co-conspirators, Tyrell Bailey and Steven Mosby, were also arrested following the chase. Bailey pleaded guilty to robbery and using a firearm during a crime of violence, and is scheduled to be sentenced to 7 years and 1 day in prison. Mosby pleaded guilty to a robbery conspiracy and is set to be sentenced on May 10, 2017.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the FBI, Prince George’s County Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department for their work in the investigation. McLeod was sentenced to 11 years in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay restitution of $10,568.
