A federal jury in Jacksonville, Florida has delivered a guilty verdict in the case of Ronnie Jerome Jones, a 39-year-old man found to be in possession of a firearm despite being a convicted felon.
The verdict was handed down on July 19, 2021 after a trial that presented evidence and testimony detailing Jones’ past convictions for violent and narcotics-related offenses.
Jones, who had been out of prison for less than nine months at the time of the offense, had sold a .45 caliber handgun to a pawn shop in Jacksonville. Under federal law, he is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to his prior convictions.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, with Special Assistant United States Attorney Cyrus P. Zomorodian and Assistant United States Attorney Laura Cofer Taylor handling the prosecution.
The conviction is a significant victory for the authorities involved in the case, and is part of a larger effort to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s initiative to address gun crimes, played a role in the case.
Jones now faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 15 years, and up to life, in federal prison for his crime. His sentencing hearing was scheduled for July 19, 2021.
