A 35-year-old Granite City man has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for his role in a disturbing child pornography case.
Ronnie Parente, Jr. was sentenced Tuesday, July 25, 2017, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois to 144 months in federal prison, ten years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay $5,100 in special assessments for possession of child pornography.
Parente, Jr. will also have to register as a sex offender. This is not the first time Parente, Jr. has faced charges related to child pornography. He was previously convicted of possession of child pornography in the Circuit Court of Madison County in 2004.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the federal government to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
The investigation was conducted by the Granite City Police Department and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Laura V. Reppert.
Parente, Jr.’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the severity of child pornography crimes and the need for continued vigilance in preventing child exploitation. The federal government’s efforts to combat this issue are crucial in protecting vulnerable children and bringing perpetrators to justice.
