Chauncy Crow Dog, 20, of Rosebud, SD, has been charged with a serious crime: Failure to Appear. According to the indictment, on or about March 24, 2014, Crow Dog knowingly failed to appear for a pretrial conference and a jury trial.
The indictment alleges that Crow Dog was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. He was set to appear in court on multiple occasions but chose to skip town instead.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 5 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Crow Dog was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service and is being held pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher is prosecuting the case, which is being investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.
The charge is merely an accusation and Crow Dog is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. However, the evidence against him is mounting, and it’s clear that he made a serious mistake by failing to appear in court.
