A Rosebud woman has been charged with a serious crime after a federal grand jury indicted her on Domestic Assault by Habitual Offender and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.
Myra Ree, 24, was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 15, 2013, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on June 10, 2013. Ree pleaded not guilty to the indictment.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher is prosecuting the case. Ree was released pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The charge is merely an accusation, and Ree is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The community is left wondering what led to this point, and what the outcome will be.
The case highlights the ongoing struggle with domestic violence in rural areas. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe has been working to address the issue through education and outreach programs.
