Ruben Carrillo Gonzalez, Wire Fraud, Hawaii 2015

Honolulu, Hawaii – In a federal court case that highlights the consequences of defying the law, a 53-year-old man has been convicted of failing to surrender for service of his term of imprisonment. Ruben Carrillo Gonzalez, a resident of Arizona, was convicted by a federal jury for his refusal to report to a federal correctional institution in California on January 5, 2015.

The case against Gonzalez began when he was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Leslie E. Kobayashi to 41 months imprisonment for committing wire fraud on September 13, 2012. However, instead of serving his sentence, Gonzalez remained out of custody during the appeal process, which was ultimately rejected by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Gonzalez’s failure to surrender was a breach of his obligation to report to the correctional institution, and his subsequent arrest on January 9, 2015, in Arizona marked the culmination of a manhunt initiated by the United States Marshal’s Service.

Assistant United States Attorney Chris A. Thomas prosecuted the case, working closely with the Marshal’s Service and the United States Pre-Trial Services Office to ensure that justice was served.

The conviction carries a sentence of up to ten years imprisonment, which will be served consecutively to the original 41-month term for wire fraud. The harsh penalties serve as a reminder of the gravity of failing to comply with the law.

Ruben Carrillo Gonzalez’s case serves as a cautionary tale for those who would seek to avoid accountability. His conviction underscores the importance of respecting the rule of law and the consequences of defying it.

The verdict in this case highlights the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies in upholding the law and bringing perpetrators to justice.
