Ruiz-Briones Gets 10 Years for Smuggling Ring

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Edgar Ruiz-Briones, a 41-year-old Mexican national illegally residing in Houston, will spend the next decade in federal prison after being sentenced for orchestrating a large-scale human smuggling operation. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos handed down the maximum sentence of 120 months on charges of alien smuggling conspiracy and illegal reentry into the United States, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.

The case, which unfolded over an 18-month period, revealed Ruiz-Briones as the central figure in a network that transported over 100 individuals across the southern border and further into the U.S. He didn’t just move bodies; he ran a sophisticated logistics operation, recruiting drivers from as far away as Kansas to ferry illegal aliens from stash houses in the Rio Grande Valley to drop-off points in Houston. This wasn’t a spontaneous act; it was a calculated, profit-driven enterprise.

Investigators discovered Ruiz-Briones maintained direct communication with the drivers, coordinating pick-up locations, tracking progress, and arranging final drop-offs. He was the money man, handling payments both from the aliens seeking passage and to the drivers who risked it all. This demonstrates a clear command structure and a systematic effort to profit from the desperation of others. Ruiz-Briones, himself an illegal alien with a history of removal from the United States, showed a blatant disregard for the law.

The sentencing comes with a significant delay in public release. According to a note from the Department of Justice, the case occurred on July 22, but the press release was withheld due to the recent government shutdown. The timing, however, doesn’t diminish the severity of the crime or the justice delivered. Ruiz-Briones pleaded guilty on July 22nd, accepting responsibility for his actions but still receiving the maximum penalty for his role in facilitating illegal immigration.

Following his imprisonment, Ruiz-Briones is expected to face removal proceedings, meaning he will be deported back to Mexico. The investigation was a joint effort between Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations and Border Patrol, highlighting the collaborative approach needed to combat transnational criminal organizations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Griffith led the prosecution.

This case falls under “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling illegal immigration networks, eliminating cartels, and protecting communities from violent crime. The operation leverages resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods. It’s a blunt message: those who exploit vulnerable individuals for profit will be aggressively pursued and brought to justice. Ruiz-Briones’ sentence sends a clear signal to others involved in similar operations – the risks far outweigh the reward.
