NEWARK, N.J. – A brazen act of religious vandalism rocked the Rutgers University campus earlier this month, and now, 24-year-old Jacob Beacher of Somerset County is facing the consequences. Federal prosecutors announced today that Beacher has been charged with a federal hate crime for breaking into the Center for Islamic Life at Rutgers University (CILRU) in New Brunswick and systematically damaging property during the sacred Eid-al-Fitr holiday.
According to a criminal complaint unsealed today, Beacher allegedly infiltrated the CILRU around 2:41 a.m. on April 10th. Once inside, he unleashed a wave of destruction, targeting religious artifacts central to Islamic practice. Among the items damaged were Turbah prayer stones – clay discs used during prostration – and numerous texts containing verses from the Qur’an, Islam’s holy scripture. The complaint further alleges that Beacher didn’t stop at destruction; he also pilfered a Palestinian flag and a charity box belonging to the CILRU.
U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger for the District of New Jersey, alongside Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, and New Jersey State Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, jointly announced the charges. Beacher is charged with one count of intentional or attempted obstruction of religious practice and one count of making false statements to federal authorities. He was arrested this morning and is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge André M. Espinosa in Newark federal court this afternoon.
This wasn’t a spontaneous outburst, authorities suggest. The deliberate targeting of religious items and the theft of symbolic objects point toward a calculated act of malice. The timing, during a major religious holiday, further underscores the hateful intent. While the investigation is ongoing, the damage inflicted extends beyond the physical destruction of property; it’s a direct assault on the Muslim community at Rutgers and beyond.
The investigation into this incident was a collaborative effort, involving a multi-agency task force. Special agents from the FBI’s Branchburg Resident Agency, prosecutors and detectives from the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, detectives from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Rutgers University Police Department, the New Brunswick Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, and the New Jersey Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory all contributed to building the case against Beacher. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Levin and Deputy Chief R. Joseph Gribko for the District of New Jersey, and Trial Attorney Daniel Grunert of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
It’s crucial to remember that these are allegations at this stage. Jacob Beacher is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, if convicted on these charges, he faces significant penalties for what authorities are calling a clear and deliberate act of hate.
