Armed Robbery Shakes Wichita Community
In a shocking turn of events, Ryan B. Schmidt, 34, of Wichita, Kansas, pleaded guilty to robbing a local drug store. On September 4, 2014, Schmidt stormed into Gessler’s Drug Store at 4817 E. Douglas in Wichita, brandishing a gun and ordering an employee to hand over prescription drugs.
According to the plea agreement, Schmidt fled the store with seven bottles of hydrocodone and three bottles of promethazine in a plastic bag. His actions sparked a high-speed chase with police, which ended when he crashed into a utility pole and another vehicle.
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom praised the Wichita Police Department and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger for their tireless efforts in bringing Schmidt to justice. The plea deal has both parties recommending a sentence between 14 and 25 years in federal prison.
Schmidt’s sentencing is set for March 9. The community is breathing a sigh of relief as the perpetrator is held accountable for his crimes. As the city continues to rebuild and heal, residents are reminded of the importance of community vigilance and reporting suspicious activity.
