SAFER AREAS FOR EVERYONE Initiative Hopes to Combat Violent Crime in Waterloo

Violent crime continues to plague the streets of Waterloo, Iowa, but a new initiative announced Thursday aims to turn the tide. United States Attorney Peter E. Deegan, Jr. stood alongside Waterloo Police Chief Daniel Trelka and representatives from federal and local law enforcement to unveil the Safer Areas For Everyone (SAFE) initiative.

The SAFE initiative is a new partnership between law enforcement and the Waterloo community to enhance efforts to combat violent crime. According to Deegan, this initiative will bring together all levels of law enforcement to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.

SAFE is an initiative in furtherance of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that has been historically successful in reducing violent crime. Other participants in SAFE include the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Iowa Department of Corrections, the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office, and members of the community.

The press conference, held at the Harold E. Getty Council Chambers, marked the beginning of the SAFE initiative. Deegan emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, ‘We need your help. We need your eyes and ears on the streets.’

Representatives from participating agencies will be available for interviews, and a press release will be provided. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about the SAFE initiative. Follow the United States Attorney’s Office on Twitter @USAO_NDIA for updates.

For too long, violent crime has plagued the streets of Waterloo. The SAFE initiative offers a glimmer of hope for a safer tomorrow. Only time will tell if this new partnership will be the solution to Waterloo’s crime problem.

The press conference took place on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at 12:00 p.m. in the Harold E. Getty Council Chambers, located at 715 Mulberry St., in Waterloo, Iowa.
