A multi-million dollar counterfeit cash scheme has been brought to light with the arrest of Sagar Steven Singh, a 42-year-old New York resident.
According to sources, Singh’s operation, which allegedly spanned over a year, produced high-quality counterfeit cash with a face value of over $5 million.
Federal authorities believe the counterfeit cash was then laundered through various means, including international money transfers and the purchase of luxury items.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York said, ‘The defendant’s brazen scheme to flood the streets with fake cash and launder it through the financial system is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by counterfeiters.’
Singh, who has been charged with multiple counts of conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to commit counterfeiting, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The case against Singh is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Adam Amir and Robert Michael Appleton, with Ellen Hanley Sise and Alexander Mindlin serving as co-counsel.
A trial date has not been set as of yet, and it is unclear whether Singh will enter a plea.
Singh’s attorney, Jeremy L. Gutman, was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
The case is being heard in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, with the docket number 1:23-cr-00236.
