A Saint Paul psychiatrist is behind bars on federal charges of receiving child pornography, accused of downloading hundreds of illicit images and videos tied directly to his home internet connection. Aviel Li Goodman, 62, made his initial court appearance today in Minneapolis before Magistrate Judge Menendez, facing one count of receipt of child pornography.
According to a criminal complaint unsealed today, undercover agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation downloaded numerous files depicting child sexual abuse from IP addresses linked to Goodman’s residence in Saint Paul between March 1, 2015, and August 27, 2017. The evidence paints a methodical pattern of access, with multiple downloads traced directly to his network over a two-year span.
On January 17, 2018, investigators executed a search warrant at Goodman’s home, seizing a computer that contained hundreds of image files and multiple video files suspected to be child pornography. Those files have since been sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) for forensic analysis and victim identification—a critical step in dismantling networks of abuse.
Goodman, a licensed medical professional entrusted with the mental well-being of patients, now stands accused of violating the most basic moral and legal boundaries. The charges, brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, underscore the reach of digital forensics in exposing predators who operate behind screens and professional facades.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Katharine T. Buzicky and Carol M. Kayser are prosecuting the case, which falls under Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to combat the online exploitation of children. The program integrates federal, state, and local efforts to identify, rescue, and protect victims while aggressively pursuing those who fuel the demand for such material.
The charges against Aviel Li Goodman are merely accusations; he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
