SENTENCING DAY LOOMS: Aldo Gonzalez, 26, of Salt Lake City, faces a mandatory 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to possession of ammunition following a violent encounter with a West Valley City couple.
GONZALEZ’S GUILTY PLEA: The plea deal was reached in the wake of a harrowing July 2016 attack on a couple outside a restaurant. Gonzalez, a member of the Nortenos Familia Varrio Loco gang, is part of the #UtahGangInitiative and Project Safe Neighborhoods.
THE INCIDENT: The victim identified Gonzalez as the attacker who, along with another man, pointed handguns at them after their encounter at a restaurant. Gonzalez has been linked to this violent confrontation that ended with no injuries for the victims.
CHASE AND CAPTURE: After the shooting, Gonzalez abandoned his car in a high-speed chase and evaded law enforcement until he was apprehended by a determined pursuit that led him into a nearby home where SWAT teams took him into custody.
EVIDENCE REVEALED: During the search of Gonzalez’s hideout, authorities found ammunition, including what appeared to be hollow-point rounds, and additional firearms cartridges in his vehicle.
PLEA AGREEMENT: The agreement includes stipulations for the 10-year sentence in federal prison, with Gonzalez also agreeing to plead guilty to three counts in a related case. He was already on parole at the time of the offense for a felony burglary conviction.
