A Jackson man has been sentenced to over four years in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Samual McCray, 26, received the 50-month sentence after pleading guilty to the charge on July 26, 2023.
According to court documents, Jackson Police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at McCray’s apartment on April 16, 2021. Upon arrival, officers found two firearms belonging to McCray in the apartment, and a third firearm in his front left pants pocket when he was taken into custody.
McCray has a previous felony conviction for manslaughter, making him prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal law. The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that this case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program, which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence in communities.
The FBI and Jackson Police Department investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen prosecuting the charges. U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee and Special Agent in Charge Robert Eikhoff of the Federal Bureau of Investigation made the announcement.
The Project Safe Neighborhoods program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results. The program was launched on May 26, 2021, with the goal of making neighborhoods safer.
McCray’s sentence is a result of the efforts of law enforcement agencies working together to reduce violent crime in the community. The sentence sends a message that possessing a firearm as a convicted felon will not be tolerated.
