A brazen bank heist in Orange, Texas, has landed a 37-year-old Bacliff man behind bars. Samuel David Sanford, III, was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison for bank robbery.
On December 19, 2012, Sanford walked into the JP Morgan Chase Bank in the 3100 block of 16th Street in Orange, Texas, and presented a threatening note to a teller demanding money. He was given $25,859.00 and fled the bank.
Sanford was identified by tipsters after the robbery and indicted by a federal grand jury on January 23, 2013. He pleaded guilty to bank robbery on October 8, 2013.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Orange Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney John Craft handling the prosecution.
Sanford has also been ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $25,859.00.
The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark. Sanford’s prison sentence marks the latest chapter in a case that has been unfolding since the bank heist in 2012.
As the investigation and prosecution of the case demonstrate, bank robbery will not be tolerated in this district. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice and protect the public.
