Dayton man held at gunpoint during credit union robbery pleads guilty to armed bank robbery in Ohio.

A Dayton man has pleaded guilty to armed bank robbery in a case stemming from a January 2020 heist at a local credit union. Samuel Hayes, 61, of Dayton, entered the plea in U.S. District Court today to armed bank robbery and using a firearm during a crime of violence.

According to court documents, Hayes entered the Universal One Federal Credit Union on Harshman Road in Dayton on January 11, 2020, and pointed a firearm directly at credit union tellers and customers. Hayes stole a total of $3,770 during the robbery.

The parties involved in Hayes’s case have recommended a sentence of 141 months in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for August 3.

Vipal J. Patel, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, and Chris Hoffman, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Cincinnati Division, announced the plea entered into today before U.S. District Judge Michael J. Newman. Assistant United States Attorney Dwight K. Keller is representing the United States in this case.

A total of $3,770 was stolen during the robbery, which is a significant amount of money for the local community. The case highlights the need for increased security measures in financial institutions to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.

The conviction is the latest in a series of high-profile cases in the Southern District of Ohio, demonstrating the commitment of law enforcement agencies to keeping communities safe from violent crime.
