Samuel Joseph Chee, a 26-year-old man from Mescalero, New Mexico, has pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon in federal court.
Chees guilty plea was entered on October 8, 2023, in connection with a January 2023 assault on Jane Doe, who is also an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe.
The assault, which occurred on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in Otero County, New Mexico, resulted in Jane Doe suffering multiple lacerations to both arms and one thumb, requiring emergency medical treatment.
Chee, who was previously held in Mescalero tribal custody for the same offense, faces an additional 18 months in prison as part of his plea agreement. He will also be subject to three years of supervised release upon his release from prison.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron O. Jordan is prosecuting the case.
