Sanofi Bribed Texas Doctors, AG Paxton Sues

AUSTIN, TX – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton dropped a bombshell lawsuit today, accusing pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis U.S. LLC (“Sanofi”) of a calculated scheme to bribe doctors into prescribing their drugs. They were thinly veiled kickbacks – “in-kind remuneration” in legal terms – designed to sway doctors towards Sanofi’s products, even if better alternatives existed.

The alleged scheme wasn’t about short-term gains. Because many of Sanofi’s drugs treat chronic illnesses, these kickbacks created years-long revenue streams for the company, regardless of whether the prescribed medication was truly the best option for the patient. It’s a cynical play, effectively holding Texans’ health hostage for corporate profit. “The quality of Texans’ healthcare should never be determined by Big Pharma bribery,” Paxton stated bluntly.

“Sanofi is in clear violation of Texas law that prohibits the exact type of kickback scheme that the company is actively engaging in. The people of Texas deserve to know that the drugs they’re being prescribed are being given to them to best address their medical needs.” Paxton is seeking over $1,000,000 in monetary relief, including hefty civil penalties, and a court order – an injunction – to halt Sanofi’s alleged unlawful practices.

This isn’t Paxton’s first rodeo with pharmaceutical giants. He previously sued Sanofi and Bristol-Myers Squibb for concealing the ineffectiveness of their drug Plavix for certain patients. He’s also targeted Eli Lilly for similar illegal kickback schemes. The Attorney General’s office has a clear pattern of going after Big Pharma when it puts profits before people.
