SAVANNAH, GA – Bernadel Semexant, 35, of Hinesville and Savannah, Georgia, a pastor connected to the House of Prayer Christian Church of America (HOPCC), is facing a barrage of federal sex crime charges, according to an indictment unsealed September 10, 2025. The indictment lays out a disturbing pattern of alleged abuse and exploitation, revealing a dark side to a figure entrusted with spiritual guidance.
A federal grand jury in the Southern District of Georgia handed down a five-count indictment charging Semexant with Enticement of a Minor to Engage in Sexual Activity, Sexual Abuse of a Minor, Transfer of Obscene Material to a Minor, Receipt of Child Pornography, and Possession of Child Pornography. The charges paint a grim picture of betrayal and abuse of power, particularly given Semexant’s position within the church community.
“Our law enforcement partners work relentlessly to protect our most vulnerable citizens from harm and exploitation,” stated U.S. Attorney Heap. “This indictment demonstrates the continued success of those efforts.” The FBI, leading the investigation, echoed the sentiment, with Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown emphasizing, “The allegations in this indictment reflect a profound betrayal of trust by an individual in a position of spiritual authority.” Brown urged anyone with information regarding Semexant or similar issues within HOPCC to come forward.
The potential consequences for Semexant are severe. Enticement of a Minor to Engage in Sexual Activity carries a minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life imprisonment, alongside a potential $250,000 fine and at least 5 years of supervised release. Sexual Abuse of a Minor carries up to 15 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. Charges related to child pornography – Transfer, Receipt, and Possession – each carry up to 20 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. In addition to these penalties, a conviction on any count requires sex offender registration and mandatory restitution to any victims.
Authorities believe Semexant may have served at multiple HOPCC locations across the United States, raising concerns that other victims may exist. HOPCC has established locations in Hephzibah, Georgia; Hinesville, Georgia; Savannah, Georgia; Fayetteville, North Carolina; Tacoma, Washington; Waco, Texas; and Clarksville, Tennessee, among others.
