SAVANNAH, GA — Ra’Quavius Rawls, a 24-year-old from Savannah, has been hit with federal charges for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The indictment is the latest blow in the city’s ongoing battle against violent crime.
On July 24, 2024, Savannah Police Department officers responded to an anonymous tip placing Rawls, who was on the “Savannah’s Top Ten Most Wanted” list, at a local gas station. As Rawls attempted to flee in his vehicle, police pulled him over and discovered a firearm hidden in the passenger side glove box.
Margaret Heap, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, emphasized the importance of removing illegal firearms from criminals. “Removing illegally possessed firearms from convicted felons play a key role in reducing violent crime in our communities,” she said. “We will continue to prioritize taking these tools of violence out of the hands individuals who are prohibited from possessing them.”
Acting Assistant Special Agent Robert Davis highlighted the collaborative effort between the ATF and local law enforcement. “The collaboration between the ATF and local law enforcement is essential in identifying and apprehending individuals who pose a threat to public safety,” he said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is investigating the case alongside the Savannah Police Department. Special Assistant United States Attorney Makeia R. Jonese is prosecuting the case for the United States.
All indicted defendants are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
