A hard-hitting crime has been reported in Iowa, where a Mexican man was sentenced to prison for illegally returning to the United States.
Savino Ortiz-Camarillo, Jr., a 36-year-old citizen of Mexico who resides in Decorah, Iowa, was sentenced to eight months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States. Ortiz-Camarillo had previously been deported from the United States on June 4, 2008, and January 30, 2009.
The case against Ortiz-Camarillo began on January 18, 2018, when he pleaded guilty to one count of illegal reentry into the United States. Immigration officers discovered him on November 28, 2017, following an arrest in Fayette County on traffic violations.
Ortiz-Camarillo has a history of run-ins with the law, including being previously convicted in Allamakee County, Iowa, of making a false report to police in December 2003; in Iowa County, Wisconsin, of hit and run involving injury in December 2007; in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa of using false employment documents in May 2008; and in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas of illegal entry into the United States in January 2009.
Ortiz-Camarillo was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by Chief United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand. In addition to the eight months’ imprisonment, he must also serve a two-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations.
The case number is 17-CR-2090-LTS, and the sentencing occurred on January 18, 2018. Ortiz-Camarillo is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
