Schenectady Man Gets Decade for Temple Israel Gun Attack

Schenectady, New York – Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, a 29-year-old resident of Schenectady, was handed a sentence of 120 months in prison for his involvement in the shooting at Temple Israel, a synagogue in Albany. The crime, which occurred on December 7, 2023, outside of the temple during a Chanukah celebration, has been labeled an act of religious hate by authorities.

Alkhader was found guilty of conspiring to straw purchase a firearm, obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs with a dangerous weapon, and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon emphasized the Department of Justice’s unwavering stance against hate crimes and antisemitism.

Acting U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III noted that this shooting was emblematic of the anti-Semitic violence plaguing the nation. He vowed to protect religious freedom and ensure safety in the Northern District of New York.

The incident began when Alkhader and an accomplice, Andrew Miller, purchased a shotgun through illegal means. The shooting followed, with Alkhader firing into the air while shouting pro-Palestinian slogans. His actions forced Temple Israel to cancel its celebration activities, leaving congregants fearful for their safety.

United States District Judge Anne M. Nardacci added a 5-year term of supervised release following Alkhader’s prison sentence. FBI Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli highlighted the significance of this case in addressing hate-fueled violence and emphasized the FBI’s commitment to justice.

ATF Special Agent in Charge Bryan Miller reinforced the importance of enforcing gun laws to prevent such incidents, commending the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies. Albany Police Chief Brendan Cox also commented on the severity of the crime and the need for community safety.
