Ex-Teamsters Union Officials Plead Guilty to Embezzlement and Wire Fraud
BELLEVILLE, IL – In a shocking turn of events, Scott Alexander, 56, and Nancy Alexander, 52, of Belleville, Illinois, have pleaded guilty to embezzlement and wire fraud. The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Donald Boyce, announced the guilty pleas today.
The charges against the Alexanders carry a possible sentence of up to 25 years in jail, a fine of up to $500,000, and mandatory restitution. Sentencing is scheduled for August 24, 2018.
As part of the plea, it was acknowledged that between January 1, 2012, and June 30, 2016, during the time Scott D. Alexander was President/Business Agent of the union Local 50 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and his wife Nancy L. Alexander was the Local’s office administrator, the Alexanders embezzled and converted Union funds by using the Union’s credit card to make personal purchases, manipulating their payroll withholdings in order to increase their net pay at the Local’s expense, receiving more vacation pay than earned, receiving salary while on vacation, and receiving additional auto allowance payments.
The U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Labor Management Standards led the investigation that resulted in the prosecution. Assistant United States Attorney Norman R. Smith is handling the case.
The guilty pleas bring an end to a long-standing investigation into the alleged embezzlement and wire fraud. The Alexanders’ actions are a stark reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in organizations.
