Scranton, Pennsylvania – In a shocking case of corporate theft, Scott Capparell, a 46-year-old man from Drums, Pennsylvania, was sentenced to 27 months in prison for embezzling nearly $395,000 from Heritage Mills Personal Care, Inc. (HMPC).
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Capparell worked as the administrator of HMPC from April 2013 to July 2016. During this period, he diverted $394,516.98 worth of HMPC residents’ monthly rent checks to an account at PNC Bank under his control, instead of to the HMPC account maintained at Mid Penn Bank.
Capparell and others withdrew all of the diverted funds for their personal use, and to conceal the scheme, he lied to HMPC’s owners and falsified HMPC’s books and records. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney Phillip J. Caraballo prosecuted the case.
As part of the sentence, Judge Richard P. Conaboy ordered that Capparell repay the stolen $394,516.98 to the victims of his crimes. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of corporate accountability and the consequences of embezzlement.
