Scott F. Carpenter, Misuse of Government Funds, Nevada 2017

Las Vegas, NV – In a shocking turn of events, a high-ranking FBI Special Agent has been found guilty of misusing government funds to fuel his own gambling addiction. Scott F. Carpenter, a 40-year-old agent from New York, pleaded guilty to one count of conversion of government money in a Nevada courtroom yesterday.

According to court documents, Carpenter and three other FBI agents traveled to Las Vegas in July 2017 to conduct an undercover operation. After the operation concluded, Carpenter visited the high-limit room of a local casino, where he used $13,500 in government money to gamble on blackjack.

U.S. District Judge Gloria M. Navarro presided over the hearing and scheduled sentencing for May 18, 2022. At sentencing, Carpenter faces a statutory maximum penalty of one year in prison, supervised release, and restitution.

The case was investigated by the DOJ Office of the Inspector General, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel R. Schiess is prosecuting the case. Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher Chiou for the District of Nevada and Special Agent in Charge James F. Boyersmith made the announcement.

Carpenter’s actions raise serious questions about the integrity and accountability of law enforcement officials. The case serves as a stark reminder that even the most trusted individuals can fall prey to corruption and abuse of power.
