Scott Russell Merritt, Union Fund Theft, New York 2018

Scott Russell Merritt, a 41-year-old former treasurer of Ironworkers Local 470, was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay restitution totaling $50,850.21 for embezzling union funds.

Merritt’s crimes took place between May 2011, and August 2018, during which time he was the treasurer of Ironworkers Local 470. It was during this time that he embezzled $50,850.21 in union funds to pay various personal expenses.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Labor Management Standards, under the direction of the Boston-Buffalo District Director Jonathan Russo.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo handled the case, stating that Merritt’s actions were a betrayal of the trust placed in him as treasurer.

Merritt’s conviction and sentence serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in labor organizations.
