Scott West, Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Illinois 2025

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Scott West, 40, of Manchester, United Kingdom, will spend the next 42 years in a U.S. federal prison after pleading guilty to three counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The sentence, handed down June 23, 2025, marks the culmination of a complex international investigation that spanned continents and brought a predatory monster to justice.

The court heard disturbing details of West’s scheme. Along with a co-conspirator, he fabricated a fake online persona – a young woman – on a popular social media platform. They used this fabricated account to target young boys, including multiple victims within the Central District of Illinois, soliciting sexually explicit images. When a victim complied, West didn’t stop there. He escalated the abuse, threatening to expose the images if the boys didn’t continue sending compromising material. But his depravity didn’t end there; West also independently sought out and exploited children online, operating across multiple countries.

U.S. Chief District Judge Sara Darrow explicitly found that West knowingly misrepresented his identity to coerce and manipulate minors into engaging in sexually explicit conduct. The gravity of the offenses, coupled with the calculated nature of his deception, clearly influenced the harsh sentence. West was initially indicted in December 2022, triggering a lengthy extradition process. A request for his handover from the UK was made in June 2023, and after months of legal maneuvering, he was finally extradited by the U.S. Marshals Service in October 2024.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Seberger, prosecuting the case, minced no words. “West manipulated and preyed upon children on two continents in his quest to fulfill his own sexual desires,” she stated. “This extradition and sentence ensured that his American victims received justice in the United States for his crimes. We will continue to work with law enforcement across the globe to bring justice to victims of abuse.” The statutory maximum penalty for each count of sexual exploitation of a child is 30 years imprisonment, with a minimum of 15 years, followed by up to a lifetime of supervised release. Judge Darrow opted to add a ten-year term of supervised release to West’s sentence.

Michael Kurzeja, Resident Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service Springfield Resident Office, emphasized the dangers of online predation. “Adults should protect children, not prey upon them online as the predator in this case did to victims in multiple countries. The sentencing in this case reflects the heinousness of this man’s insidious actions to threaten and harm kids,” Kurzeja said. “The Secret Service is committed to keeping children safe online and pursuing crimes committed against them.”

The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Greater Manchester Police Serious Crime Division in England, the Illinois State Police, and several local law enforcement agencies. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative dedicated to combating the exploitation of children. The Secret Service, working alongside the Greater Manchester Police Online Child Abuse Investigation Team, led the investigation, with critical support from local police departments in Geneseo, Colona, Henry County, and Kewanee.
