Sejuan Walker, a 22-year-old from Marion, Iowa, has been handed a lengthy sentence in federal prison for possessing a stolen gun as a convicted felon.
On January 28, 2018, Walker and two others went ‘car hopping’ in Alburnett, a rural town in Linn County, Iowa. The group would go from parked car to parked car to see which cars were unlocked, searching for valuables inside. One of the trio found a handgun in a pickup truck and stole it, along with a wallet.
Walker later used a debit card from the stolen wallet to make purchases at the Wal-Mart in Anamosa. Law enforcement officers located Walker at an apartment building in Coralville, Iowa, on February 1, 2018. As officers approached him, Walker went into the apartment building and then out a back door. Later, the stolen handgun was found in a clothes dryer in the common area of the apartment building.
At his plea hearing, Walker admitted to possessing the handgun on February 1. His sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids. Walker was sentenced to 87 months’ imprisonment, which is over seven years. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
Walker’s case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. The program has been successful in bringing together all levels of law enforcement to tackle rising violent crime in America.
Walker is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt and investigated by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
Sejuan Walker’s case highlights the dangers of ‘car hopping’ and the consequences of possessing a stolen gun as a convicted felon. Walker’s sentence serves as a reminder that the law enforcement community is committed to keeping communities safe and holding those responsible for violent crimes accountable.
