Sepkowitz Kristi K, Federal Embezzlement, New Mexico 2024

ALBUQUERQUE — The Postmaster of the Capitan Post Office, Kristi K. Sepkowitz, 56, of Alto, N.M., was sentenced to three years of probation and a $1,000 fine for embezzling money belonging to the United States.

According to court records, Sepkowitz held a position of trust as Postmaster of the Capitan Post Office in Lincoln County, N.M., when she committed the offense, which occurred between February 2012 and December 2013.

Sepkowitz acknowledged in her plea agreement that she engaged in an unlawful scheme to embezzle and convert funds, including cash and money orders, belonging to the U.S. Postal Service to her own use. She issued postal money orders to herself without making appropriate payment and took cash from daily postal deposits to use for her own purposes.

The scheme resulted in Sepkowitz embezzling and converting more than $450,000.00 in postal funds over the course of the scheme. However, Sepkowitz has fully repaid the U.S. Postal Service for the postal funds she embezzled and converted to her own use.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brock E. Taylor, of the U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office.

Sepkowitz is currently serving three years of probation and paying a $1,000 fine as a result of her conviction. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of trust and accountability in positions of authority.

The U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work together to ensure that those who abuse their positions of trust are held accountable for their actions.
