NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Wilian Serrano-Moreira, 34, has admitted to violating federal law by illegally reentering the United States after being previously deported. The Honduran national pleaded guilty August 26, 2025, to one count of illegal reentry of a previously removed alien, a violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a). This isn’t a sob story; it’s a clear breach of federal law, and Serrano-Moreira will answer for it.
According to court documents, Serrano-Moreira was discovered within U.S. borders on April 15, 2023, having slipped back into the country without the Attorney General’s authorization. He was originally deported on July 17, 2019 – a date that clearly meant nothing to him as he brazenly disregarded the law. This isn’t about seeking a better life; it’s about flouting the system.
The feds aren’t playing around. Serrano-Moreira is facing a maximum sentence of two (2) years behind bars, followed by up to one (1) year of supervised release. Beyond the potential loss of freedom, he’s looking at a hefty fine of up to $250,000.00 and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 9, 2025, before United States District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown.
This case falls under the umbrella of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative that sounds good on paper, but really represents a full-scale federal push to crack down on illegal immigration and dismantle transnational criminal organizations. It’s a broad stroke approach, funneling resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) into border and interior enforcement.
Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson isn’t mincing words. He praised the collaborative effort of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in bringing Serrano-Moreira to justice. It’s a team effort, and a signal that federal agencies are coordinating to address what they view as a crisis at the border and within the country.
Assistant United States Attorney Jon M. Maestri of the General Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution. Expect a firm stance and a push for the maximum sentence. Serrano-Moreira made a calculated risk, and now he’ll face the consequences. This case serves as a warning: illegal reentry is a serious federal offense, and the Department of Justice is determined to enforce the law. * * *
