Sex Offender Sentenced to 33 Months for Failure to Register
Chad S. Williams, a 42-year-old man from Rochester, New York, has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender in both New York and Georgia. U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa handed down the sentence in a federal court in Rochester.
Williams, who was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender, last updated his registration in 2009. However, in July of that year, the defendant left the state of New York to live in Georgia, where he failed to register and update his status until March 2011.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany H. Lee stated that the defendant’s actions were a direct violation of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), which requires sex offenders to update their registration information whenever they move to a new state.
The sentencing was the culmination of an investigation by the United States Marshals Service, led by United States Marshal Charles Salina. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the federal government.
Project Safe Childhood is a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet. The initiative has led to the rescue of thousands of victims and the prosecution of hundreds of offenders.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. praised the efforts of the United States Marshals Service and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany H. Lee for their work on the case. The sentencing marks a significant victory in the fight against sex crimes and highlights the importance of registering as a sex offender.
Williams will also serve six years of supervised release following his prison sentence. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of complying with sex offender registration requirements and the consequences of failing to do so.
