A 46-year-old man from West Virginia has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender in Florida.
Kyle Lopez, 46, of Morgantown, West Virginia, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Carlos E. Mendoza to 36 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for his failure to register as a sex offender as required by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).
Lopez had pleaded guilty on June 11, 2018. He had previous felony convictions for indecency with a child, sexual assault against a child, and failure to register, which he committed before moving to Florida in September 2017.
After receiving notification from West Virginia, the U.S. Marshals Service located Lopez on October 31, 2017, in Volusia County, Florida. He was then charged with failure to register as a sex offender in violation of SORNA.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kara M. Wick.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.justice.gov/psc.
