Felon in Possession of Firearm Lands Roswell Man in Hot Water
Albuquerque, NM – Shane Mann, 30, of Roswell, N.M., has pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to a recent federal court hearing in Las Cruces, N.M.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) arrested Mann in February 2018, following an investigation into his August 9, 2017, activities in Chaves County, N.M. During the execution of a state search warrant, law enforcement officers found multiple firearms, ammunition, and drug paraphernalia in Mann’s residence.
Mann’s prior felony convictions, including shooting from a motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, and possession of a controlled substance, prohibited him from possessing firearms or ammunition. Despite this, Mann was found with a loaded handgun under a pillow in the bed where he was laying at the time of the search.
During today’s proceedings, Mann pleaded guilty to a felony information charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. At sentencing, Mann faces a maximum penalty of ten years in federal prison. He remains in custody pending a sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.
The case was investigated by the ATF, the Roswell Police Department, and the HIDTA Chaves County Metro Narcotics Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alfred J. Perez of the U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office.
The HIDTA Chaves County Metro Narcotics Task Force is comprised of investigators from the Roswell Police Department, ATF, the FBI, and the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office. The High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program was created by Congress with the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988 and is a program of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), which provides assistance to federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies operating in areas determined to be critical drug-trafficking regions of the United States.
