BURLINGTON, VT – A California man is facing federal charges after allegedly torching the Burlington office of Senator Bernie Sanders earlier this month. Shant Soghomonian, also known as Michael Soghomonian, 35, previously of Northridge, California, was indicted by a grand jury on charges of using fire to damage a building used in interstate commerce – specifically, the office located at One Church Street.
According to court records, Soghomonian walked into the building on the morning of April 5, 2024, and made his way to the third floor where Senator Sanders’ Vermont office is situated. Security footage captured him spraying a liquid near the office door before igniting it with a handheld lighter. A fire quickly erupted as he fled down the stairs. Investigators say distinctive items worn and carried by Soghomonian in the video were later recovered during his arrest and searches of his hotel room and vehicle.
The incident prompted a swift response from federal authorities, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Soghomonian appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle today for a continuation of a detention hearing. Judge Doyle ruled that Soghomonian will remain detained pending further court proceedings, citing the seriousness of the alleged crime and potential flight risk.
If convicted, Soghomonian faces a hefty sentence: not less than 5 years and not more than 20 years in prison, along with a fine of up to $250,000. However, the ultimate punishment will be determined by the Court, taking into account the United States Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors outlined in the United States Code. Prosecutors are led by Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Lasher.
Soghomonian is being defended by Assistant Federal Public Defender Mary Nerino. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont stresses that the indictment contains only allegations, and Soghomonian is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
