PHILADELPHIA, PA – Shaquan Brown, 29, of Philadelphia, is facing a lengthy federal prison sentence after a jury found him guilty Monday of orchestrating a string of terrifying home invasion robberies targeting business owners and their families. The crimes, spanning November 2019 to January 2020, involved brutal violence, zip ties, duct tape, and the brazen use of firearms.
Federal prosecutors detailed how Brown and his crew meticulously planned the attacks, specifically targeting those they believed kept large amounts of cash at home – including Asian business owners and others dealing in cash. Brown himself conducted surveillance, using a GPS tracking device to pinpoint victims’ residences. The investigation revealed a cold, calculated effort to exploit the hard work of others for quick profit.
The most harrowing incident occurred on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2019, when Brown and two accomplices ambushed the owner of a Delaware County nail salon as he returned from work. The victim was forced inside, restrained with zip ties, and brutally assaulted with fists and a gun while the robbers demanded money. They then escalated the terror, forcing him to his home where his wife, children, and nanny were held captive at gunpoint. The family was zip-tied while the homeowner continued to be beaten and robbed, with the invaders chillingly stating, “we have been watching you for weeks.”
Just days later, on January 3, 2020, Brown attempted another armed robbery in Chester County. This time, the attempt was thwarted by a home security alarm. Brown and an accomplice were forced to flee, leading police on a desperate foot chase through the woods and into a creek before being apprehended. Authorities recovered duct tape, zip ties, and a firearm from Brown’s backpack, solidifying the evidence against him.
“Home invasion robberies are terrifying for victims, shattering their sense of security where they once felt most safe,” stated U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. “It’s unconscionable that running a successful business is enough to make you a target for criminals like Shaquan Brown, who prefer taking other people’s money at gunpoint to earning it for themselves. This verdict not only holds Brown accountable for the harm he’s done, it will keep him behind bars for years, so he can’t hurt anyone else.”
Charles Doerrer, Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Philadelphia Field Division, echoed Romero’s sentiment. “Everyone should feel safe in their home,” Doerrer said. “The violence that these families suffered is a serious crime, and this conviction will leave Philadelphia’s neighborhoods and homes safer. ATF is committed to working with our partners to prevent such violent crimes and seek justice for its victims.” Brown is scheduled for sentencing on July 30, 2024, and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 84 months in prison. He was convicted of conspiracy to commit armed home invasion robberies, robbery affecting interstate commerce, attempted robbery affecting interstate commerce, using and brandishing a firearm during a robbery, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
