Shawn Dale Sexton, Felon in Possession of Firearms, Florida 2023

Bristow Man Sentenced to 289 Months for Terrorizing Community with Gunfire

Oklahoma City, OK – On July 23, 2017, a chaotic scene unfolded in Bristow as Shawn Dale Sexton, 26, fired a weapon at officers during a high-speed chase, striking a patrol car. Witnesses identified Sexton as the driver of a white Jeep Wrangler, which had been involved in a shooting in Slick, Creek County, Oklahoma.

Sexton’s rampage was not the first time he had shown a disregard for human life. A review of his past convictions revealed seven felony convictions, including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Aggravated Assault and Battery, and Conspiracy to Deliver Controlled Substance.

Thanks to a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Bristow Police Department, Sexton’s reign of terror came to an end. United States Attorney Trent Shores announced that United States District Judge Claire V. Eagan sentenced Sexton to serve 289 months in federal prison for Felon in Possession Firearms and Ammunition.

“Sexton terrorized an entire community. His actions threatened the lives of citizens and law enforcement alike. In the Northern District of Oklahoma, we will continue our relentless pursuit of dangerous felons who possess firearms, especially those who show no regard for human life. We must hold them accountable,” said U.S. Attorney Shores.

The prosecution was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime through targeted enforcement and community engagement. Assistant United States Attorney Joel-lyn A. McCormick handled the prosecution of this case.

Sexton has been in custody since his arrest on July 23, 2017, and will now face the consequences of his actions behind bars. As the community breathes a sigh of relief, the Bristow Police Department and ATF are praised for their tireless efforts in bringing a violent offender to justice.
