In a shocking turn of events, a federal jury has convicted a Springfield man of distributing cocaine, crack cocaine, and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
According to court documents, Sherad Therrien, 24, sold a cooperating witness a total of 63 grams of cocaine and crack cocaine, as well as a HiPoint, 9mm handgun and 7 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The transactions took place between September 2013 and March 2014 and resulted in a total of $2,847. The cooperating witness was a key player in the investigation, which was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Springfield Police Department.
The charges against Therrien carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, 5 years of supervised release, and a fine of $1 million. He is also facing a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, 3 years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Hillman has scheduled Therrien’s sentencing for July 16, 2015. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd E. Newhouse of the U.S. Attorney’s Springfield Branch Office.
Therrien’s conviction is a significant blow to the city’s ongoing struggle with cocaine trafficking. The Springfield Police Department, along with its law enforcement partners, has been working tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle cocaine trafficking organizations.
