Breaking News: Tragic Crash Claims Life of 3-Year-Old Child in Iyanbito, New Mexico.

According to reports, a devastating single motor vehicle crash on May 5, 2013, in Iyanbito resulted in the death of a three-year-old child. The crash, which occurred on the Navajo Indian Reservation, also left two other individuals injured.

The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Sherie Rena Pete, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. Pete has been in federal custody since her arrest on May 14, 2013, and remains detained pending her sentencing hearing.

As part of her plea agreement, Pete admitted to killing the victim while driving under the influence of alcohol. She stated that she had been drinking before driving her vehicle off the roadway, overcorrecting, and flipping the vehicle one and a half times.

Pete’s reckless actions have led to severe consequences. At sentencing, she faces up to eight years in federal prison and will be required to pay restitution to the victims of her criminal conduct.

The case was investigated by the Crownpoint office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob A. Wishard.
