CHARLESTON, W.V. – A Charleston man’s reckless behavior has landed him in federal prison. Shon Wayne Cobbs, 45, was sentenced to four years in federal prison for a gun crime, announced United States Attorney Carol Casto. Cobbs was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a crime that carries significant penalties.
The investigation began on February 3, 2013, when the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a disturbance at Cobbs’ residence. Deputies arrived to find Cobbs in the kitchen, arguing with a woman. During the altercation, Cobbs discharged a .40 caliber pistol three times, causing bullet fragments to scatter throughout the kitchen. The deputies quickly subdued Cobbs and recovered the firearm, as well as 16 additional guns from various locations within the residence.
Cobbs’ history of violence caught up with him, as he was prohibited from possessing any firearm under federal law due to a 2008 conviction for unlawful wounding in Kanawha County Circuit Court. In that case, a jury found Cobbs guilty of assaulting a woman and breaking her arm by twisting it behind her back. Cobbs pleaded guilty to wanton endangerment in 2013 as a result of the same conduct, and was sentenced to home confinement.
Assistant United States Attorney Joshua Hanks handled the prosecution, and United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin imposed the sentence. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide initiative to reduce gun crime by networking local programs targeting gun crime.
Cobbs’ reckless behavior has left a trail of destruction in its wake. The woman he assaulted in 2008 is still recovering from the physical and emotional trauma caused by Cobbs’ actions. His sentencing serves as a reminder that gun crimes will not be tolerated in our community.
