A 32-year-old Martinsburg woman has admitted to dealing heroin in Berkeley County, copping to a federal drug charge that could land her behind bars for two decades. Shonna Marie Thomas pled guilty to one count of Distribution of Heroin, according to U.S. Attorney Bill Powell.

Thomas admitted she sold the deadly narcotic in February 2017, fueling the opioid crisis that has ravaged West Virginia for years. The transaction took place in Berkeley County, a hotspot for drug activity where overdoses remain a grim daily reality.

Now, Thomas faces the full weight of federal law: up to 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine. The actual sentence will be determined under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, weighing the severity of the offense and any prior criminal record.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney C. Lydia Lehman, who also serves with the Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The government’s push for accountability was backed by hard evidence gathered through coordinated law enforcement action.

Investigators from the Eastern Panhandle Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, worked alongside the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office to build the case. Their collaboration underscores the federal-local crackdown on drug networks operating in rural Appalachia.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the proceeding. Sentencing is scheduled for a later date, as the machinery of federal justice grinds forward.
