ATLANTA, GA – In a shocking display of disregard for human life, Shusta Traverse Gumbs, 40, of the U.S. Virgin Islands, was sentenced to 19 years and 6 months in prison for assaulting federal marshals with his motor vehicle.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Gumbs was convicted of two counts of using a motor vehicle to assault members of the U.S. Marshals Service’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (SERTF) on October 21, 2016.
Gumbs was attempting to flee from arresting officers when he pinned a Deputy U.S. Marshal between two vehicles, crushing his thigh, knee, foot, and ankle. He then fled the scene at a high rate of speed, striking another vehicle and running multiple stop signs and red lights before abandoning his vehicle and eluding capture for four days.
‘In an attempt to flee arresting officers, Gumbs showed no regard for life when he seriously injured one of the Deputy Marshals with his vehicle,’ said U.S. Attorney Byung J. ‘BJay’ Pak.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from the Atlanta Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr., Chief of the Violent Crime and National Security Section, prosecuted the case.
Gumbs’ lengthy prison sentence reflects the government’s commitment to prosecuting those who seek to injure law enforcement officers who work tirelessly to protect the public.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime by prosecuting those individuals who most significantly drive violence in our communities.
