PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Meredith Shuster, 36, of Cranberry Township, is facing a substantial prison sentence after admitting to a brazen student loan fraud that bilked private lenders out of $729,000. The scheme, revealed in federal court today, involved the cold-blooded exploitation of her own parents’ identities and financial information.
Shuster pleaded guilty to two counts – bank fraud and mail fraud – before United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak. The details laid bare in court paint a picture of calculated deception. She didn’t just borrow money; she stole identities to do it, leaving her parents unknowingly on the hook for a debt they never incurred. This wasn’t a desperate attempt to get an education; it was a calculated grab for cash.
According to prosecutors, Shuster leveraged her parents’ personal data to fraudulently obtain the hefty sum in private student loans. The money’s current whereabouts remain a key point of the ongoing investigation. While the full scope of her spending hasn’t been released, authorities are meticulously tracing the funds to identify any assets that can be seized.
Judge Hornak has scheduled sentencing for August 8, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. Shuster is looking at a potential maximum sentence of 50 years behind bars, along with a fine of $500,000. While sentencing guidelines will factor in her criminal history (or lack thereof) and the severity of the crime, the sheer amount of money involved suggests a lengthy prison term is likely.
For now, Shuster remains free on bond, a temporary reprieve before facing the consequences of her actions. Assistant United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar is leading the prosecution, determined to ensure Shuster is held accountable for her callous betrayal of trust.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the United States Postal Inspection Service (Postal Inspector Molly Hackimer), the Department of Education Office of Inspector General, and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. They worked tirelessly to untangle the web of deceit and bring Shuster to justice, sending a clear message that identity theft and financial fraud will not be tolerated.
