Shelby Sigler, FEMA Scam, Florida 2024

TAMPA, FL – Shelby Sigler, 34, of New Port Richey, is facing serious federal charges after allegedly attempting to defraud the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the wake of Hurricane Idalia. United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the indictment today, signaling a zero-tolerance stance on exploiting disaster relief funds.

According to the indictment, Sigler allegedly knowingly submitted false statements and representations to FEMA between November 2023 and January 2024. The scheme centered around an application for assistance through FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program – a lifeline for those devastated by the storm. Investigators say Sigler attempted to illegally obtain money intended for genuine victims of Hurricane Idalia.

The amount of money Sigler allegedly attempted to fraudulently obtain has not been disclosed, but federal prosecutors are prepared to pursue a maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison if she is convicted. This isn’t a slap on the wrist; it’s a clear message that preying on disaster victims won’t be tolerated. The Department of Justice is cracking down on those who seek to profit from the misfortune of others.

“This indictment demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding disaster relief funds and holding accountable those who attempt to exploit these vital resources,” stated a source within the U.S. Attorney’s office, speaking on background. “Every dollar stolen from FEMA is a dollar taken away from legitimate victims desperately trying to rebuild their lives.”

The investigation was spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security – Office of Inspector General, with crucial assistance from the Pasco Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Greg Pizzo will be leading the prosecution, building a case based on the evidence gathered during the investigation. An indictment is not a conviction. Sigler is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Anyone suspecting fraud related to any man-made or natural disaster is urged to report it immediately. The Justice Department’s National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF) Hotline can be accessed via the NCDF Web Complaint Form at www.justice.gov/disaster-fraud/ncdf-disaster-complaint-form. Don’t let the vultures profit from tragedy – report suspected fraud and help ensure aid reaches those who truly need it.
