FRESNO, Calif. – A 24-year-old man from West Sacramento has been accused of transporting a massive amount of methamphetamine in his vehicle.
Simeon Hernandez-Ortiz, 24, was indicted on one count of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it, announced U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott.
According to court documents, on February 6, Hernandez-Ortiz was pulled over by a law enforcement officer while traveling north on I-5 in Stanislaus County. The officer conducted a search of the vehicle and found 85 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the trunk.
The discovery was made possible through a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the California Highway Patrol, Stanislaus Investigative Unit.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen A. Servatius is prosecuting the case. If convicted, Hernandez faces a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $10 million fine.
It’s worth noting that the charges against Hernandez are only allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The court will ultimately determine the sentence based on various factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against methamphetamine trafficking in the state of California. The Grimy Times will continue to provide updates on this case as more information becomes available.
